We saw “Lost in Translation”
We saw “Lost in Translation” last night at the new Landmark Midtown Art Cinema. While not a perfect movie it was very, very good. Bill Murray was incredible and hilarious and Scarlett Johhansson was excellent and strikingly beautiful. I haven’t laughed that hard in a very long time. I think much of the dialog must have been improvised because it seemed very natural. Probably an 8 or 9 out of 10. Sofia Coppola has a wonderful eye for cinematography, and can spin quite a story. I really enjoyed “The Virgin Suicides” and “Lost in Translation” is a fine second feature. Must be nice to have a Daddy that can executive produce a film for you, but that aside, she is truly talented.
The music score was very nice also, at times very Sakamoto-esque. Suprisingly it was by former Redd Kross and Air drummer Brian Reitzell, and Kevin Shields, guitarist for My Bloody Valentine and Primal Scream.
Before we went to dinner we went to the new Vietnamese restaurant, Nam. It’s owned by the folks from MF Sushi Bar. While the atmosphere was similar (trendy, club type employees and decoration), and the food was decent (not nearly as amazing at MF Sushi Bar), in the end, the experience made us realize that it would probably be tastier and much cheaper to go to an authentic Vietnamese restauraunt like Bien Thuy.
Bless you Johnny.

Well at least one project is kicking in now. I need to get a big jump on this one, mainly because a) I have no idea when the other projects will kick back up and b) I have my freebie/comp sites to finish (Dollsquad, Dentition and Three Phase Media).
Last Friday we hit the Starlight Drive-In again. This time we actually had some folks go with us! Last Fall at GPC, I had a Computer Science class taught by Dianna Spence, a very intelligent and funny person. Former classmate Tara Straw suggested we get together for a happy hour. Great idea! I suggested the drive-in afterward and everyone was set to go. Well Tara cancelled at the last minute and so it was just Me and Joyce, and Dianna and her fiance Pete. We met up at The Local for a couple of drinks then headed to the drive-in. They weren’t too enthused about Freddy vs. Jason, so we decided on Freaky Friday and Pirates of the Caribbean. We had seen both before (missed the first 45 minutes of Pirates though), but we had no problem seeing them again. Freaky Friday is a very entertaining movie. Pirates was great too, but a little too long I think.
I finally harvested the habaneros from the planters in front of the house. 106 doses of smoky spicy flavor! I found a recipe for a papaya salsa that called for a pound and a half of peppers. I thought that sounded like a good way to get rid of a bunch of them. That sounded like a lot of peppers so I added about 10. Well…we quickly realized that it was looking for one and a half habaneros! YIKES! We’re saving it to spike other fruity type salsas.
What a weekend! Hard to
What a weekend! Hard to believe that I met Mary Woronov! It was at last weekend’s Drive-Invasion at the Starlight Drive In. The music was great on both days. The best bands were The Hentchmen, The Forty-Fives, Southern Culture on the Skids, and The Woggles.
