Mommy and Daddy Bring Confection to Atlanta!
When I saw New York City’s Mommy and Daddy in Toronto a couple of weeks ago I didn’t know too much about them. In the meantime I hit their website and got familiar with their engergetic electro-punk songs. When the lovely Vivian and the rockin’ Edmond graced The Drunken Unicorn last night with their drum machine and fuzzed out bass I was ready!
I have to say to bad for the rest of you that they’re coming to the end of their tour. Remaining dates are all in May and they are Tampa tonight (5/25), Tallahasee (5/26), Savannah (5/28), Winston-Salem (5/29) and Philadelphia (5/31). GO SEE THEM!
Edmond said that they will touring this fall when their first full length CD comes out, but until then buy their EP CDs! The current one is Fighting Style Killer Panda.

ROCK!
Darby is 9!
Today is Darby’s birthday! As for the last few years we headed to Piedmont Park for a birthday picnic. The weather was wonderful as we munched on doggie birthday cake and strawberries with whipped cream. We skipped the party at Canine Academy this year. Darby hasn’t been there since last November due to his illness. Hopefully he’ll be back there in June. It was Darby’s worst most difficult year and it seems to have aged him a bit. I hope he feels better for his next birthday!
Gang of Four and the Big TO!
We had a great time in Toronto last weekend with host with the most Steven Venn. Highlights included a great show by Mommy and Daddy at The Drake and of course a brilliant show at the Phoenix by Gang of Four. Both bands were extremely friendly before and after their shows.
I asked GoF singer Jon King if they were touring again and possibly coming to Atlanta, and he would not commit. Hopefully they’re all getting along (as they appeared to during the show) and will come to Atlanta!
Toronto Here I Come!
Ahhhh. Finally the day is here! We had been planning a trip to Toronto this Spring, not only because it’s a great city to get away to, but I’ve wanted to hang out with one of my TotallyRadio buddies, Steven Venn! We had also planned on going to London to see Claire Kember but work hasn’t allowed the 7 or 8 days to go there so off to Toronto!
What prompted this weekend? The return of the mighty Gang of Four! One of my all time faves, they aren’t coming to Atlanta so we’re going in Toronto!
As evidenced by Claire’s visit a couple of weeks ago, Steven should prove to be an exellent host. Stacey-BWC might even take the drive from Ottawa to hang out a bit! We’re really looking forward to this trip!
Considering the Benefits of FAME
Attended the Atlanta MMUG meeting last night. We were presented with a fantastic and thought provoking talk about starting and growing your own business by Justin Beals of Roundbox Media.
After this Leif spoke discussed the use of Flashout, ASDT, MTASC, and Eclipse (FAME) in developing Flash projects. Beside the handy use of Eclipse for many tasks during production such as starting and stopping servers and monitoring databases, it was a discussion about the benefits of MTASC in compiling ActionScript.
What I got out of it was that MTASC is an excellent tool for AS2 coders to use with their favorite IDE (Eclipse, SE|PY, etc). It makes compiling a snap compared to the chugging old Flash IDE. The consensus though was that you should ALWAYS do your final compilation with Flash. In my definite future use of MTASC (with SE|PY), I would probably do a safety compile in Flash two to three times a day.

Maybe Partying Will Help (we jam econo)
A few months ago I heard that a documentary was being produced about the late, great Minutemen. It was being produced by a guy named Keith Schieron who was a big fan, but suprisingly never got into them until several years after D. Boon’s death. When I heard that it had premiered, Shieron and I emailed back and forth a bit about getting the film to Atlanta. Finally I found that “We Jam Econo: The Story of The Minutemen” was being screened at The EARL this past Tuesday.
Me and Joyce and about 100 people had a real treat in what was the story of a truly unique band (the second release on SST!) and the relationship between them. It has always been very sad for me to hear “History Lesson,” the story of D. Boon and Mike Watt’s friendship. It was especially sad to see it performed acoustically in this film.
When they started talking about the making of “Double Nickels on the Dime,” I whispered to Joyce that it was one of the best albums ever. Moments later there was a parade of people on the screen telling us that it was one of the top 10 albums of all time. Great minds think alike.
If you are a fan or even curious about The Minutemen by all means GO SEE THIS FILM. Joyce even thought that people that had never even heard of them would like it.
Congratulations and thanks to the producers of “We Jam Econo” for making a document that will cement the memory of The Minutemen forever.
Screening dates are here.
